Ice-off conditions usually occur in April and can be excellent fishing. DWR crews will spend time in May spawning native Colorado River cutthroat trout for regional waters. While spawning operations are taking place, the inlet stream is closed to angling. Water coming in during the spring can be turbid and the lake color can become stained. Weed and moss growth is minimal at this time. Fly fishing is one of the best ways to catch fish at Lake Canyon. When fish are deep, try chironomids, scuds and nymphs. In the mornings and evenings, dry fly patterns can produce numbers of good fish. Traditional spin tackle can be successful as well (spinners, jakes, small Rapalas). As this is a special regulations fishery and a regional broodstock water, please consider barbless hooks or bending barbs to reduce injury. DWR crews will be working on another phase of stream habitat restoration this spring. Please be aware of trucks and equipment above the reservoir and along the roadways.
