Trout fishing is slow to fair during the summer as water temperature warms. Rainbow trout will be most active early and late in the day, but as water temperatures warm up rainbow trout can struggle to survive. Rainbow trout have not survived as well in recent years due to competition with shiners and drought conditions. They may continue to struggle until wipers knock the shiner density back down. Smallmouth bass seem to be doing well, with fish up to four pounds observed. Smallmouth bass often provide the most consistent fishing throughout the summer. Cast crankbaits and jigs along rocky shorelines. Wipers have really benefitted from an increase in golden shiners during the last couple of years. Wipers can provide some exciting action, but are most active at dawn, dusk, and after dark. We are also trying to establish a population of black crappie in Newcastle this year. A small number were stocked in 2024, with more to be added in 2025. Catfish are doing really well too. Anglers have reported catching some as big as 6lbs.
Largemouth bass have recently been observed in Newcastle, it is unknown where they came from. In our fall sampling we found an abundance of largemouth bass up to 2lbs. Remember introducing fish into Utah's waters is illegal.
